Computer or electronic device not working?

First, try rebooting the computer or turning off your electronic device and then turning back on. Check to make sure your devices are properly plugged in to all appropriate ports – do you have power? Is your monitor connected to your computer tower? Or your TV connected to your cable, computer, speakers, etc?

Safety and security tips.

  • Never plug power bars into power bars, this is a potential fire hazard.
  • Ensure to power down your PC at the end of each workday, save on power consumption and minimize access to being potentially hacked.
  • Never click on links from unknown sources, call your IT Dept for questions if you’re unsure a link/file/email is safe.
  • Always double check the recipient when receiving email attachments to prevent opening malware/viruses.
  • Never phone a number from a pop up on your computer, your IT Dept will never opt to contact users via pop-ups on user’s devices.  Call your IT Dept for guidance.
  • If you feel unsure in any type of technical situation you find yourself in, always feel free to contact your IT Dept for assistance, it’s what we’re here for.  No question is ever a stupid question.  Our goal is to empower our users as much as possible.

Slow at typing? We're got a solution.

Use ‘talk to text’ in Google Docs (it’s free!). Open a new document in Google Docs, go to the Tools menu and enable Voice Typing. Then start dictating.

Note: you will need a microphone on your computer (even your built in mic) or be on smart phone (like an iPhone).

How to take and crop a screenshot.

On a Mac computer, press “Command + Shift + 5” this will allow you to take a screenshot and crop it at the same time. On Windows 10, go to Start, enter the Search Bar, and type “Snipping Tool”. Then click + drag the borders to change the boundaries of the screenshot.

You can also take an existing screenshot and edit it afterwards. On a Mac, find your screenshot image and open it in Preview. Highlight the area you want to crop to and press “Command + K” this will crop to your highlighted area. Make sure to save your file.

How to check for computer updates.

Check your PC for updates weekly when possible. To do this, go to your settings, and locate the “Windows Update” option.  Contact your IT Dept if you need assistance.
